This Waltzing Matilda musical jug by Diana Pottery of Marrickville in Sydney was modelled by Tony Vacek in 1951, and apparently was made as a beer jug, holding two pints. The design was registered in 1951, and according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald they retailed for £6/7/6. The Swiss made movements were expensive and sometimes difficult to obtain, which may explain why the run was shortlived and the fact that some were sold without the musical mechanism. Reported production numbers range from under a thousand to six thousand. Many years ago at an antiques fair, a lady told me that her mother-in-law had painted Diana items at her home. Once a week a van would bring undecorated items to the house, and take away the painted ones to be fired. The jug stands 200 mm high and has a diameter of 150 mm. The jug is in very good condition, and the music component still works.
