This pair of Copeland's porcelain vases are decorated with a hand painted and gilded onglaze Imari pattern over underglaze blue. This style of decoration was very popular in the first quarter of the nineteenth century and had a resurgence in the 1880's and 1890's. On the bases are the handpainted mark "Spode" in homage to the early painted mark at Spode, the pattern number (2154), the artists mark, and Copeland's printed backstamp. Pattern 2154 was originally introduced in around 1815. Also on the base of one is the remains of a retailers paper label, showing that the retailer was in Paris, or had a branch in Paris. The pair stand 150 mm (6 inches) high and have a diameter of 90 mm (3.5 inches). Unfortunately one of the vases has two shallow chips to the base, one is 5 mm ( just under 1/4 of an inch) long and the other 3mm (1/8th of an inch). C 1895.
