This large hand thrown jug by Lucy and Hatton Beck has a lovely rustic quality to it, with signs of the potters fingers as the only decoration, beneath a mottled brown glaze. It could also be used as a vase, for both fresh flowers or a dried arrangement. In 1939 Henry Hatton Beck (1901-94) married Lucy Boyd (1916- 2009) and they set up a pottery in Murrembeena in Melbourne, which they later sold to Lucy's brother, Arthur Boyd. In 1961 they moved back to Murrembeena where this jug was made sometime in the 1960's. It stands 279 mm high, has a diameter of 214 mm and weighs a hefty 3.2 kgs. It is in very good condition.
