This very pretty Edwardian inlaid mahogany ladies stationery box would grace any ladies desk. The sloping lid is inlaid with a cushion shaped cartouche which contains an Art Nouveau rendition of two carnations, intertwined with a ribbon and carnation leaf. The leaf was originally stained a darker green, but over the last 120 years it has faded, so that now you can just make out some pale vestige of the colour. The petals of the carnations have been delineated with pen and ink work, whilst the top and the front are edged with boxwood stringing which contrasts nicely against the mahogany. The interior features eight compartments which would have been for note papers, larger papers and envelopes, and is original save for the lid satin which has been replaced. The exterior has retained a lovely rich patina. It stands 182 mm (7.25 inches) high, is 257 mm (10 inches) wide, 148 mm (5.75 inches) deep, and is in very good condition. It would date from around 1905.
