The cartwheel penny was circulated in 1797 as the first British copper penny. The obverse has a portait of George III and the reverse has a seated statue of Brittania. This fairly worn specimen has been converted into a locket with facility for two photographs inside. It is 40 mm (1.5 inches) in diameter, mounted in white metal, possibly silver but unmarked, and weighs 50 gms, including the chain. The chain measures 300 mm (12 inches) in length.
