This large and very decorative Stone China lidded soup tureen, platter and four plates are by Davenport and are decorated with a hand painted and gilded pattern using the Imari palette of underglaze blue, iron red and gilding, with the addition of green and purple. The pattern which is Davenport's pattern number 76 features stylised flowers and berries together with diaper patterns in cartouches to the edges.
The platter (it could also be a stand for the tureen) measures 415 mm ( 16.5 inches) in width, is 337 mm (13.5 inches) in depth and stands 40 mm (1.5 inches) high. It is in good condition with only some faint scratches to the central well to detract from it.
The tureen stands 275 mm (10.75 inches) high , is an imposing 385 mm (15.25 inches) in width and 260 mm (10.25 inches) deep. It weighs a hefty 3.2 kg (7 lbs). There is only some very slight loss of the gilding to detract from it and a thin, shallow firing crack that runs inside the tureen for about 70 mm (2.75 inches).
The two larger plates measure 255 mm (10 inches) in diameter, while the smaller ones are 225 mm (8.75 inches). One of the plates has a very small chip to the back of the rim. The set dates from around 1820.
