Originally from a tea set, this Copeland stoneware hot water jug with a silver plated lid features a hand applied sprigged decoration of classical figures. Just under the lid is a sprigged frieze of  acanthus leaves, and below that is a thin band of beads produced by a coggle wheel. There is also an attractive turned design around the base. The jug is then finished with a cobalt blue glaze that complements the tinted grey body and the white figures. Sprigs are made when clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. Standing 215 mm (8.5 inches) high, it is in very good condition, but the lid has been replated some time ago. The lid was made by George Cutts and Sons who ceased trading in 1896. Impressed into the base is Copelands' mark and "England", so this jug dates from the period 1891 to around 1896.
