This blue and white porcelain part dessert set is by the well regarded firm of Brown-Westhead and Moore of Hanley in Staffordshire. The pattern is called Pomona and features transfer prints of various blue fruit shown to striking advantage against the white porcelain. This type of design fits into the Aesthetic Movement, which was a European adaptation taken from Japanese decoration in the latter part of the nineteenth century. The comport has a diameter of 230 mm (9 inches) and stands 80 mm (3.25 inches) high, while the plates have a diameter of 225 mm (8.75 inches). None of the pieces are marked but examples can be seen in figures 523 and 556 of Robert Cluett's "Staffordshire Pottery". Two of the plates have cracks, one of which is hidden by the pattern. The rest of the set is in very good condition. The set would date from around 1880.
