Antique Balinese temple deer, carved and painted. Well looked after as it has been inside.  Some are left outside in Bali and fade quickly.
Purchased from the late Harry M Miller when he was selling his converted Chinese laundry abode in Woollahra, Sydney in the 1980's.  It was full of Balinese antiquities.
These carved antique deer are not allowed out of Bali now, as they are part of the people's culture.

In some places of Bali they are known as menjangan, which is derived from the old Javanese word for deer.  In other places they are called kidang, which is closer to the modern Indonesian kijang or deer.

Usually, special temples called sanggah seluangan have a deer which is symbolic of the descent from Majapahit ancestors. The deer is part of the Balinese peoples' connection with the spirit world.
